By Peter Macdiarmid – 7 August 2018 – 06:04:48The world’s largest aluminium smelter has been caught red-handed leaking radioactive material into the atmosphere, a global regulator said on Wednesday.

A report by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said the Glencore-owned aluminium smelt in Brazil had been leaking radioactive metal particles for six months.

The leak happened in January and February 2018.

The smelters operator, Rio Tinto, said it was the first time that radioactive metal had leaked into the air since it started producing aluminium in 1996.

Glencore said it is cooperating with the U
